Our Story
Heavenly Hills Fabrics and Crafts is located in the gently rolling foothills of West Virginia, surrounded by glorious natural beauty and friendly neighbors. The people of our state are blessed with amazing musical talents and incredible crafting skills in various mediums such as glass, clay, wood and cloth. West Virginia artisans are known worldwide for their beautiful works and we are so honored to call this unique area home.
Welcome to the heart of West Virginia! My name is Barbara and I have enjoyed living here all my life. I’ve been sewing since I was just a little girl, starting with doll clothes and then moving up to making a few pieces for myself. When I was a young woman, I made my very first quilt for my parents’ anniversary with the help of a wonderful neighbor, Donna. She nurtured my need for near perfection and taught me valuable lessons in basic quilting skills, fabric coordination and, of course, the fine art of unsewing! That quilt, a “Trip Around the World” in reds and blues, was made with the help of Eleanor Burns’ book of the same title, and had matching pillow shams.
It didn’t take too long for the fabric bug to bite! My personal stash has been growing steadily since that first quilt and shows little sign of slowing down. The number of my UFOs (unfinished objects) has also increased dramatically, while the completed pieces are few and far between! My husband, David, is a bit skeptical that I can ever use all the fabric in my stash – but those of us that love fabric know that using it all up isn’t really the point anyway, right? Our daughter, Jessica, made her first quilt, a beautiful wall hanging in pinks and purples, when she was nine, so it seems that the family tradition will continue to flourish into the next generation. Alex, our son, is more interested in flying airplanes than sewing, but he does have a creative mind, so who knows what the future will hold?
Heavenly Hills Fabrics and Crafts has been my dream for several years. Beautiful fabrics are more than eye candy – they soothe my soul and lift my spirits. There’s nothing quite like a skillfully made quilt in fabrics with gorgeous colors! Although I will miss the face-to-face interactions with my customers, the start-up expenses of a brick and mortar store were a bit overwhelming to us. We have decided to open our virtual doors first in order to build a market presence and a solid reputation for quality products and outstanding customer service. In addition to this online shop, we also set up as vendors at quilt retreats, guild meetings and quilt shows, where we have great fun making new friends and meeting our customers in person.
On a more personal note, I am currently a candidate in the National Quilting Association 's Judge Certification Program. As such, I am looking for opportunities to judge, scribe or aide at quilt shows in our state. This is such an amazing journey and you can read more about the experiences I have and the lessons I learn on my blog . Also, visit our gallery for a look at some of my favorite picks of photographs I have taken over the years.
West Virginia is rich with tradition and talent. We are very proud of our heritage and have tailored our store to illustrate our family’s values and history. Therefore, you may be surprised by a black and white photo of our ancestors or a handcrafted finished item for sale alongside our regular products. We plan to implement “Mountain Masterpieces” in the near future, which will be a showcase of, and market for traditional finished crafts from the Appalachian Region. Please bookmark our site and check back often, as Heavenly Hills Fabrics and Crafts will continue to grow, expand and improve to serve you better!
